Lissa Gray, their director, formed the National Children's Choir of Great Britain in 1998, and their first Summer School was held in Reading, with subsequent week long courses being held each Easter and Summer holiday.

Membership of the choir is open to boys and girls between the ages of 9 & 15 and a half. Auditions are held every autumn half term at a number of venues around the country.

The aim of the Choir is to allow young people to experience the sharing of singing as an expressive art form and in so doing to gain in confidence and self-reliance.

The courses are residential and, apart from the choir work and all the recreational activities both during the day and the evening, each child has individual singing lessons during the week. Singing and playing together forms a bond that will be taken through into adulthood.

The choir went on a highly successful three-week tour of Australia & New Zealand, combining sightseeing with concerts and musical events. On return, the Senior Tour Choir joined with other members of the NCC at Malvern College to rehearse for the Youth Prom, which was held in the Birmingham Symphony Hall the following weekend. NCC continues to grow, and membership now stands at 90 - 100. Each year a new intake, which auditioned in October-November, enters the NCC as a training choir; each member stays for at least two courses before moving on to the main choir.

In 2005 a new choir, Dulce Corum, was formed. This choir consists of past members of the NCC aged 15 years upwards and is upper voices.  Membership is by invitation.

In 2007 the Easter Course was held at Repton School in Derbyshire, and the Summer Course was at Harrogate Ladies College, ending with a very successful concert that was held in St. Wilfrid’s Church, Harrogate. Dulce Corum performed at the concert, and then started preparation for a series of lunchtime recitals, which were given at the National Trust House in Beningbrough, Harewood House and York Minster.
